We charge the billionaires and their Democratic and Republican parties and politicians with murder, SOCIAL MURDER. The ruling class spends trillions on endless imperialist wars and tax breaks and bailouts for billionaires and their corporations, but they can’t find the money for clean water. The billionaires’ destruction and contamination of our public water system in Newark and around the country, that has taken place over decades, is part of a larger privatization and destruction of all our public services, from education to health care. Statement of John Jay Arena, Jobs and Equal Rights for All Candidate for Essex County

On Tuesday, voters in Essex County will have the opportunity to vote for the world we want, not a lesser evil. A vote for my candidacy for Essex County Executive, for the Jobs and Equal Rights for ALL program, is a vote for a real workers’ alternative. And workers have no choice but to put forward a real alternative.

The lessons from the election of the fascist Jasir Bolsonaro as President of Brazil are clear: we can only defeat the rising tide of fascism by uniting all workers—immigrants and native-born, black and white, gay and straight—to fight for the world we want and need. We must unite our movements to take back the wealth from the real criminals—the billionaire class—to create good, well-paying jobs and free quality public services, from health care to education, for all. If we fail to provide a real solution to the crisis facing broad swaths of society, the fascists will fill the void with their racism and hate to pit one group of workers against another, to fill the pockets of the billionaires, to drag the world into a new dark age.

Because of pressure from our movement, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka this week became the first elected official in Essex County to publicly call for Essex County to end their collaboration with ICE. The Newark City Council, who are allied with the mayor as part of the "TEAM Baraka" slate, need to do the same. Just as the Jersey City and Hoboken City Councils have done in Hudson County, the Newark City council needs to pass a resolution demanding the Essex County Freeholders use their authority to rescind the ICE contract.

At the City Council meeting Wednesday, September 19, a half-dozen activists of the Jobs and Equal Rights for All Campaign, including John Jay Arena, the campaigns’ candidate for Essex County Executive, will speak to demand the City Council take action.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo finally broke his silence and defended his blood money contract to imprison immigrants at the county jail to WNYC’s Matt Katz in a story on the stations’ website. “My job,” the four-term Democrat explained, “is to keep taxes at a minimum and to bring in revenue.” Joe D. said of the County’s ICE contract: “We’re doing it because someone has to do it, and we know we can do it better than anyone else.” Asked about whether he was sidelining moral ideals for cash, he scoffed. “It’s absurd,” DiVincenzo said. “We’re doing our job here. It’s the law. And whatever immigrants we have here we’re treating with care.”

“Just substitute the word ‘slaves’ for ‘immigrants’ and any slave catcher in the 1850’s could have said the same thing,” said Jay Arena, the Jobs and Equal Rights for all Candidate for Essex County Executive, in response to DiVincenzo’s remarks. “Joe D. is just as wrong as the slave catchers were in helping to enforce unjust and unconstitutional laws,” Arena added. “It is time he takes heed of the demand of a growing movement and respect the 14^th Amendment to the Constitution that guarantees equal rights for all, including immigrants. He can show that respect for the Constitution by immediately ending his contract with ICE.”

JOE D SHOWS WHAT SIDE HE IS ON: “TRUMP’S AND ICE’S” SAY THE ESSEX EIGHT

On Friday morning eighteen New Jersyans—men and women, black and white, immigrant and native-born, ranging in age from nineteen to seventy-one—gathered at the front doors of the Essex County Hall of Records in Newark to send a clear message: we will not be silent. We will not be silent while our immigrant brothers and sisters are dragged off to ICE concentration camps, including one in Newark run by Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo. We non-violently blocked the entrance to the building, saying that Essex County either had to stop doing business with ICE, or there would be no business as usual.

Instead of taking action on our demand to close the 800-bed concentration camp, DiVincenzo and his partner in repression, Sheriff Armando Fontoura reacted to our non-violent protest by having deputies of the Essex County sheriff’s office violently assault and arrest us eight, including one participant who had only criticized police actions.
