Clean Water is a Right for Newarkers and Everyone!
Make the Billionaires Pay!
Working People Must Unite to Fight for the World We Want!
We charge the billionaires and their Democratic and Republican parties and politicians with murder, SOCIAL MURDER. The ruling class spends trillions on endless imperialist wars and tax breaks and bailouts for billionaires and their corporations, but they can’t find the money for clean water. The billionaires’ destruction and contamination of our public water system in Newark and around the country, that has taken place over decades, is part of a larger privatization and destruction of all our public services, from education to health care. These crimes must end! Working people must unite and fight for the world we want.

Jobs, Free Public Services and Equal Rights for All!
Brazil Shows the Consequences If Workers Offer No Alternative
Statement of John Jay Arena, Jobs and Equal Rights for All Candidate for Essex County
On Tuesday, voters in Essex County will have the opportunity to vote for the world we want, not a lesser evil. A vote for my candidacy for Essex County Executive, for the Jobs and Equal Rights for ALL program, is a vote for a real workers’ alternative. And workers have no choice but to put forward a real alternative.
The lessons from the election of the fascist Jasir Bolsonaro as President of Brazil are clear: we can only defeat the rising tide of fascism by uniting all workers—immigrants and native-born, black and white, gay and straight—to fight for the world we want and need. We must unite our movements to take back the wealth from the real criminals—the billionaire class—to create good, well-paying jobs and free quality public services, from health care to education, for all. If we fail to provide a real solution to the crisis facing broad swaths of society, the fascists will fill the void with their racism and hate to pit one group of workers against another, to fill the pockets of the billionaires, to drag the world into a new dark age.

Because of pressure from our movement, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka this week became the first elected official in Essex County to publicly call for Essex County to end their collaboration with ICE. The Newark City Council, who are allied with the mayor as part of the "TEAM Baraka" slate, need to do the same. Just as the Jersey City and Hoboken City Councils have done in Hudson County, the Newark City council needs to pass a resolution demanding the Essex County Freeholders use their authority to rescind the ICE contract.
At the City Council meeting Wednesday, September 19, a half-dozen activists of the Jobs and Equal Rights for All Campaign, including John Jay Arena, the campaigns’ candidate for Essex County Executive, will speak to demand the City Council take action.

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo finally broke his silence and defended his blood money contract to imprison immigrants at the county jail to WNYC’s Matt Katz in a story on the stations’ website. “My job,” the four-term Democrat explained, “is to keep taxes at a minimum and to bring in revenue.” Joe D. said of the County’s ICE contract: “We’re doing it because someone has to do it, and we know we can do it better than anyone else.” Asked about whether he was sidelining moral ideals for cash, he scoffed. “It’s absurd,” DiVincenzo said. “We’re doing our job here. It’s the law. And whatever immigrants we have here we’re treating with care.”
“Just substitute the word ‘slaves’ for ‘immigrants’ and any slave catcher in the 1850’s could have said the same thing,” said Jay Arena, the Jobs and Equal Rights for all Candidate for Essex County Executive, in response to DiVincenzo’s remarks. “Joe D. is just as wrong as the slave catchers were in helping to enforce unjust and unconstitutional laws,” Arena added. “It is time he takes heed of the demand of a growing movement and respect the 14th Amendment to the Constitution that guarantees equal rights for all, including immigrants. He can show that respect for the Constitution by immediately ending his contract with ICE.”

Newark Municipal Court Judge Ashley Gibbons dismissed all charges against five of the “Essex Eight” protestors this morning. The five, Jay Arena, Mary Rizzo, Whitney Strub (all from Newark), Eric Lerner (Warren), and Yael Webber (Montclair) were among the eight people arrested June 29 by the Essex County Sheriff’s Office during a protest demanding the end of Essex County’s contract to hold immigrant detainees for ICE. However, at a hearing this morning the Municipal prosecutor, Stephanie Range, declined to prosecute the charges and recommended dismissal. Judge Gibbons agreed, saying that the defendants were exercising their First Amendment rights and dismissed the cases. The records of the arrests will be expunged. Three other protestors will have hearings at a later date. “We expect these cases to be dismissed as well,” said Mr. Lerner. “We will continue to demand that Essex County close the concentration camp they run for ICE. There will be no business as usual for Essex County as long as they do business with ICE.”

JOE D SHOWS WHAT SIDE HE IS ON: “TRUMP’S AND ICE’S” SAY THE ESSEX EIGHT
On Friday morning eighteen New Jersyans—men and women, black and white, immigrant and native-born, ranging in age from nineteen to seventy-one—gathered at the front doors of the Essex County Hall of Records in Newark to send a clear message: we will not be silent. We will not be silent while our immigrant brothers and sisters are dragged off to ICE concentration camps, including one in Newark run by Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo. We non-violently blocked the entrance to the building, saying that Essex County either had to stop doing business with ICE, or there would be no business as usual.
Instead of taking action on our demand to close the 800-bed concentration camp, DiVincenzo and his partner in repression, Sheriff Armando Fontoura reacted to our non-violent protest by having deputies of the Essex County sheriff’s office violently assault and arrest us eight, including one participant who had only criticized police actions.

Jay Arena, Candidate for Essex County Executive, Calls for New Jersey to Protest Supreme Court Decision on Friday
End All Detentions and Deportations!
Free Movement For All!
Jobs, Free Public Services, and Equal Rights for ALL!
Jay Arena, candidate of the Jobs and Equal Rights for All campaign for Essex County Executive, condemned Tuesday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the Trump administration’s travel ban aimed at majority Muslim countries. “Yesterday’s Supreme Court decision upholding Trump’s Muslim ban stands firmly in the Court’s racist tradition of Dred Scott, Plessy vs Ferguson (upholding Jim Crow) and Korematsu v. United States (upholding concentration camps for Japanese-Americans),” the Jobs and Equal Rights For All standard bearer emphasized. “The courts will not protect our rights. We must act!”

Jay Arena, Candidate for Essex County Executive, Calls for New Jersey to Join National Movement to Shut Down ICE
End All Detentions and Deportations!
Jobs and Equal Rights for ALL!
Jay Arena, candidate of the Jobs and Equal Rights for All campaign for Essex County Executive, will hold a Saturday press conference to call for a blockade of the Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) concentration camps in Essex County and across New Jersey and the country. The ongoing blockade of ICE operations in Portland, Oregon organized by local activists should be replicated in Essex County and across the United States.
“During World War II the US government was able to round up people of Japanese descent and place them in concentration camps because the American people failed to denounce and organize to stop that crime,” argues Arena, an Associate Professor of Sociology at the College of Staten Island who is challenging the four-term incumbent Joseph DiVincenzo. “We can’t again stand by, we must take direct action now to shut down the internment camps at the border and everywhere, including right here in Essex County. Furthermore, we demand no individual, government, or business provide any support to ICE. Silence in the face of the atrocities is consent,” he emphasizes.
